The Passport Program to Hold Lights On Afterschool! Rally October 16th, 2008
7,500 Rallies Nationwide Aim to Make Afterschool Programs Available to All

The Passport Afterschool Program will sponsor a Lights On Afterschool Rally open-house event on Thursday, October 16th from 5 pm until 7 pm. The rally in support of afterschool programs will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the creation of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative, the principal funding stream for federal support for afterschool programs.  It will be one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation on this day.  Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is Chair of Lights On Afterschool again this year.  Participants in your community will call for expanding afterschool opportunities so that every child who needs a program has access to one, and discuss the harm that results from budget cuts and freezes.

Participants in the Lights On Afterschool rally include local government leaders, as well as local business leaders, community leaders, educators and other officials. The event will highlight three of the significant contributions that afterschool programs make in the Atlanta area: keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn, and relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities during the afternoon hours.  The open house program will present a play put on by The Passport Program’s eighth graders, “Nobody’s Home: What happens when good kids are left alone”.  A speech will be given by Phillip Whatley, a local community activist who started the annual Walk For Peace Rally in Clayton County.  There will also be a candle lighting ceremony and light refreshments will be served. Parents, supporters and community members are expected to attend.

The Passport Program opened in October 2008 in partnership with the Department of Human Resources (DHR). It serves 60 children at Pointe South Middle School, providing homework assistance, mentoring, tutoring, enrichment, and internship, volunteer, and apprenticeship opportunities, and well as state-wide, national, and international travel and service opportunities. The program is a collaboration between the school system, the Department of Human Resources, local businesses, local leaders, and local schools, and benefits the Atlanta area.

The Mission of The Passport Program is to cultivate young citizens who are in tuned with their community and the world around them, and understand that new experiences provide opportunities to learn and change their lives, and subsequently the world.

The Afterschool Alliance is a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization working to ensure that all children have access to quality afterschool programs. More information on Lights On Afterschool is available at www.afterschoolalliance.org.
